Gaskell Thunderbass

The original Thunderbird bass first appeared in 1963. Gibson never made it as a production left handed model until 2013, and only for that year. In response to requests from lefty bassists from all over the world I made the first Gaskell Thunderbird-style bass in 2012.

Being a three-part body, it had to be hand made. This is not the usual thing in factories that mass produce musical instruments. With something that slows down factory production such as the making of a complicated guitar like this, there are extra production costs. This bass cost too much to make and it's MSRP was not profitable, but I still sold it.

Local and global world events made it economically impossible to continue producing intermediate-priced factory models and in 2013 I transitioned to full Custom shop. In fact, we were already a Custom shop doing upgrades, full setups and fretwork, and custom paint jobs; but after 2013 all Gaskell guitars have been 100% made in Australia as individual custom builds.

If you want a left handed Thunderbird style bass with personal options look no further than the Gaskell THUNDERBASS. This was always a core Gaskell model and is in production again from 2021 under our same decade-long partnership with Cilia Custom Guitars in Sydney.

A Gaskell THUNDERBASS starts from AU$ 3990 (US$ 2900) depending on options and finishes.
